Getting on and off
If you are travelling by public transport in the Netherlands for the first time, let us explain for you how public transport works here.
Line number and direction
If you want to travel by public transport, you need to be aware that every bus and tram route goes in both directions using the same route number. So before you get on, you have to check that both the direction and the line number are correct. The direction is shown both on the front of the bus or tram and on the stop.
Use the front door to get on the bus. If you want to get off the bus, use one of the other doors. If you are travelling by tram, train or metro, then you can get in and out by any door.
During the journey
The next stop is announced in the buses and trams. There is also usually a screen showing the next stops.
You can let the driver know that you want to get off at the next stop by pressing one of the ‘Stop’ buttons. The bus driver will open the door for you at the stop. On the trams, you open the door yourself by pressing the button marked ‘Open’.
