What is Regio Vrij?

With Regio Vrij, you can travel unlimited by tram, bus, and metro within your chosen area for a fixed monthly fee. This is useful if you often travel by public transport in the The Hague-Rotterdam region. You can travel easily with your OV-pas or debit card. Choose from more than 20 areas. You can easily link Regio Vrij to the card you use to check in and out.

When should you choose Regio Vrij?

This subscription is a good option if you:

  • Travel frequently within the The Hague-Rotterdam region.
  • Don't want to constantly think about travel costs: you pay a fixed monthly amount and know where you stand.
  • Want to check in and out easily with your OV-pas or debit card.

Good to know

With Regio Vrij, you can travel unlimited on trams, buses, and metros with transport companies in the region, such as HTM, RET, EBS, and TransDev.

  • You don't need to pick anything up: the subscription is linked directly to your OV-pas or debit card from the start date.
  • Always check in and out, even with the subscription.
  • Easily view and correct your HTM journeys in your My HTM account.
  • Regio Vrij automatically stops after one month.
  • Always travel with the same pass. A pass on your phone and your physical pass are two different passes.
  • Tip: The subscription works best on a OV-pas or a physical debit card.
  • Read the product terms and conditions here for all the details.

Which travel area suits you?

To determine the best subscription and price, it is important to know where you are traveling. You can travel freely within this area.

What are travel areas?

South Holland is divided into zones for public transport. Several zones together form a travel area. By working with travel areas, we ensure that you never pay too much. You can travel freely within the area you choose for your subscription.

What is OVpay?

Regio Vrij is a subscription based on OVpay.

OVpay is the new way to travel in the Netherlands. You use your OV-pas or debit or credit card to check in and out of public transport.

Get on and hold your card against the card reader at the door; you will hear one short beep. When you get off, do the same thing again and you will hear two beeps.

What are the advantages of Regio Vrij?
  • You can travel as much as you like within your chosen zone using multiple transport operators.
  • You travel for a fixed monthly fee.
  • You check in and out using your public transport pass or your debit card.
  • You can arrange everything directly online. Once purchased, you can start using your travel pass straight away. There’s no longer any need to visit a ticket machine to collect your pass.
  • You can choose from 25 zones.
  • When purchasing, you choose whether to travel using the new public transport card or your debit card.

Is it possible to select multiple areas within the Regio Vrij?

Yes, you can purchase multiple travel zones and link them to a single pass. However, each travel zone is a separate subscription, so you won’t receive a discount on the price. It’s usually more cost-effective to purchase the largest travel zone that covers all the routes you wish to travel on.

Do I need to check in and out with Regio Vrij?

Absolutely! You must check in and out! Always check in and out when changing trains too.
Always check in and out using the exact same card to which you have added Regio Vrij, otherwise Regio Vrij will not be applied and you may end up paying extra.

Where can Regio Vrij be used?

The Regio Vrij pass can be used in the area you have purchased from the following transport operators:

  • EBS (bus);
  • HTM (bus and tram);
  • RET (bus, tram and metro);
  • Transdev (bus, ParkShuttle).

Regio Vrij is not valid on night buses or with public transport operators other than those listed above. Furthermore, the P+R scheme for discounted parking cannot yet be used in combination with Regio Vrij (OVpay).

Why can't I choose center zones and star values with Regio Vrij, as I did with the Regional Monthly and Annual Pass?

Zone numbers and star ratings were often unclear and complicated, resulting in many incorrect choices being made when purchasing a subscription. Offering areas makes the choice clearer.

How many cards can I put on a Regio Vrij subscription? And can I also put it on the ov-chipkaart?

Regio Vrij can be added to one (digital) debit card or credit card. Please note: a physical and digital debit card belonging to the same bank account (IBAN) are technically considered two different cards.
Regio Vrij is only available on debit cards or credit cards (OVpay and therefore cannot be added to an ov-chipkaart).

Why do I have to provide my email address, name, date of birth, and passport photo when purchasing Regio Vrij?

Regio Vrij is a personalised subscription. To verify this, we need your key personal details: name, date of birth and passport photo. You must enter or upload these personal details when purchasing the subscription. An email address is also required for this. We also use your date of birth to determine whether you are eligible for the reduced subscription rate.

Please note: if someone else is paying for the subscription (for example, in the case of a minor user), the user’s name, date of birth and passport photo are required; not those of the parent or carer paying for the subscription.

How is it determined whether a user is eligible for the reduced rate or must pay the full rate?

The start date of the monthly subscription determines which price is charged. It depends on your age on the start date.

Does the age discount also apply to Regio Vrij?

When purchasing a Regio Vrij pass, a reduced subscription rate applies to the age categories Child (4 to 11 years) and Youth (12 to 18 years). This rate does not apply to the 65+ age group. When travelling with Regio Vrij, you receive a 100% discount within the selected area.

If you travel outside your chosen area using your balance, an age-related discount (34% reduction) applies to the kilometre and basic fare for the age groups 4 to 11 years and 65 years and over. The youth group (12 to 18 years) therefore does not receive a discount.

My old Regional Monthly/Annual Subscription was cheaper than Regio Vrij. Why is that?

We have defined the Regio Vrij zones based on travel patterns using the current Regio season ticket on the OV-chipkaart. Regio Vrij zones that are exactly the same as those covered by the current Regio subscription have the same monthly price. Regio Vrij zones that are larger or smaller than those covered by the Regio subscription have a higher or lower price.

What do I pay if I travel outside my free travel region with my Regio Vrij pass?

If you travel outside the valid area of your Regio Vrij pass, the fare for the distance travelled outside the valid area will be automatically deducted from your account (if travelling with a debit card) or from your balance (if travelling with a OV-pas).

You pay a per-kilometre rate (kilometre rate) plus the basic fare for the distance travelled outside the valid area. See htm.nl/tarieven for a fare overview with OVpay.

Please note: If the cost of the journey outside your zone cannot be debited from your account or balance, you will no longer be able to check in with Regio Vrij. You must therefore first settle your debt (debit card) or top up your balance (OV-pas) before you can check in again.

What is OVpay?

OVpay is the new way to check in and out on public transport. Check in with the new OV-pas, your debit card or credit card.
