OVpay: the new way to check in and out on public transport
OVpay allows you to check in and out using your debit card, credit card, mobile phone, or the new OV-pas (public transport pass) on buses, trams, metros, and trains throughout the Netherlands. OVpay is the successor to the familiar OV-chipkaart (public transport chip card) and makes traveling smarter and easier. Decide for yourself how you prefer to travel.
Travelling as a tourist in The Hague? Here’s what you need to know:
You can easily ride HTM trams and buses using OVpay Netherlands - just tap your credit card or debit card. No need for a separate OV‑chipkaart or OV-pas. Make sure to check in and out with the same card to avoid extra charges. You’ll be charged at the same public transport fare rate, and your journey details appear on your bank statement the next day.

Top 8 most asked questions

Why is OVpay being introduced? And what will change?
The technology behind the OV-chipkaart is almost 20 years old and will soon be replaced by a completely new system called OVpay. You can choose to check in and out with your debit card, credit card, or mobile phone, or with the new OV-pas. The new technology behind OVpay offers travelers more convenience, more choice, and fewer restrictions.

Should you switch now?
It is permitted and possible. However, you do not need to switch immediately, but it is convenient to do so when your OV-chipkaart expires. Do you have a subscription? Always check with your transport provider to see if the subscription is already available on OVpay.

How much does traveling with OVpay cost?
You pay a basic fare and a price per kilometer traveled for each trip. These are the same fares as when you travel with the OV-chipkaart. You can also travel with a subscription. In that case, special fares apply. More information about subscriptions at HTM can be found here.

What can I do with the OVpay app?
Among other things, you can: See whether you have checked in and out during your trip. Adjust your missed check-in or check-out after just 6 hours. Easily create an overview for your expense claims. Add an age discount to your card.

Can I use my subscription to travel on OVpay?
Yes, most transport operators develop passes specifically for OVpay. Check here to see which subscriptions HTM has available for OVpay.

I already travel with an age discount on my OV-chipkaart. Do I need to reapply for the age discount on OVpay?
Yes, you can only travel with an age discount if you register. You can register via the OVpay app or via ovpay.nl.

What if I forget to check out?
No worries. You can easily correct your travel transaction via ovpay.nl. Any excess travel costs paid will then be refunded to you. Please note: this can be done from 6 hours after your journey. You have a total of 60 days to adjust your check-in or check-out.

How do I add an age discount to my pass?
You can register via the OVpay app or via ovpay.nl. You will be asked to provide your name, date of birth, and photo. If your date of birth falls within an age category that entitles you to an age discount, you will be able to travel with your pass at a discount from that moment on.
